As one of the newest members of the Women Leading Travel Advisory Board, Angela Val, President and CEO of Visit Philadelphia, brings a thoughtful and grounded perspective on leadership, innovation and the evolving traveler experience. Next week, she’ll also join fellow industry leaders on the C-Suite Panel at the Women Leading Travel Forum, where she’ll share insights on navigating change and leading with purpose in today’s travel landscape.
We caught up with Angela to talk about the industry trends she’s watching closely, the leadership values that guide her and the advice she has for the next generation of female leaders.
- What do you love most about the industry?
It’s like the circus — it’s fast-moving, there’s always something new, and there’s a little bit of something for everyone. I also love that it’s built around in-person experiences and that travel makes our world feel bigger. Nowadays, we spend so much time on our phones and screens, and travel reminds us how much there is to explore in the real world.
- What is one industry trend you’re closely tracking and why?
AI-powered trip planning and how it’s shaping the traveler experience in real time. We’re seeing more travelers use AI tools to discover destinations, build itineraries and book travel. Younger generations, especially Gen Z, are fully embracing algorithm-driven platforms like TikTok to plan their next trip.
It has me thinking about how our industry can keep up — making sure our content is accessible, accurate and compelling no matter where travelers are searching online.
Travel is ultimately about human connection and human experience. I’m interested in how we can use AI to make travel feel even more personal, not less.
- What values are most important to you as a leader?
Knowing when to be hands-off. As leaders, we have to recognize that we don’t know everything. That’s why building a team you trust is so important.
I believe in hiring the right people and giving them the tools, support and space they need to tap into their creativity and do the job they were hired to do. Micromanaging doesn’t build trust or motivation.
It’s also important to stay connected to your own core values. Show up with them every day and lead from them consistently — that’s the foundation of a strong, uplifting company culture.
- What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?
Particularly as women, we’re taught from a young age to be careful and anticipate every challenge that could arise. My advice is to spend more time believing in yourself, your vision and your team rather than worrying — as much as you can, at least.
The fears you don’t face become your limits. Practice even one small act of bravery in your work or leadership style every day.
- Where is your favorite place you’ve traveled to — and why?
I love Madrid, Spain. The small streets, slower pace of life and vibrant culture remind you to take a breath and really be present.
But I also love the Outer Banks in North Carolina. It’s a laid-back beach town where I spent every summer with my family, so it’s full of nostalgic memories.
